Phillies’ Hamels still has Red Sox’s number

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:40 p.m. ET May 18, 2012

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – It was no surprise that Philadelphia earned its season-best sixth straight victory with Cole Hamels on the mound.

Hamels pitched seven strong innings, and Hunter Pence and Freddy Galvis homered to lead the Phillies to a 6-4 win over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night.

Hamels (6-1) gave up three runs on six hits while striking out nine and walking one. It was the sixth straight win for Hamels, who improved to 4-0 in five career starts against Boston.

“I’m just doing everything I’ve done the past couple of years,” Hamels said. “I can’t say there’s any secret. We’re able to battle and get runs and I’m able to hold it. It’s the same sort of way I’ve gone out and pitched. I try to put up as many zeroes as I possibly can.”

Philadelphia improved to 7-1 in Hamels’ eight starts this season.

“I’m focused on trying to get wins, no matter how they come,” Hamels said. “If I can plug away and do my job, then good things will happen and they have been.”

Streaking Carlos Ruiz went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for Philadelphia, which moved two games above .500 for the first time this season. Ruiz, who entered leading major league catchers in several offensive categories, is 11 for 17 in his last five games.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in as many chances. Papelbon had 219 saves in six seasons with the Red Sox before signing a four-year, $50 million deal with Philadelphia in the offseason.

The closer said there wasn’t any extra meaning in getting the save against his former team.

“I want to go out there and try to preserve all the wins I can for my starters,” Papelbon said. “I think for me I take a little extra pride in that. That’s basically kind of what it boiled down to for me.”

Adrian Gonzalez, Mike Aviles and Cody Ross homered for the Red Sox.

The game matched clubs with the second- (Phillies, $175 million) and third-highest (Red Sox, $173 million) payrolls, though each entered in last place in their division.

Daniel Bard (3-5), converted to a starter before this season, matched his shortest outing of the year by allowing five runs on three hits with five walks in five innings.

The right-hander struggled with control in the first inning when the Phillies scored four runs on just two hits thanks to three walks. Philadelphia went up 2-0 on Ruiz’s two-run single to center before Ty Wigginton’s sacrifice fly and John Mayberry Jr.’s RBI double gave the Phillies a four-run lead.

“I’m still getting out of my relieving mode and I needed to be more aggressive there,” Bard said of the first inning. “This loss is definitely on me.”

Said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, “Those amount of walks are not acceptable. He just didn’t have command.”

Hamels said the early run support was a boost.

“Being able to score runs early is huge,” he said. “It puts a slight cushion on just trying to go out and battle. Even when you do get a ton of runs in the first inning it almost seems it’s not enough because they keep pounding away on you and keep battling back.”

Boston got a run back in the third on Aviles’ solo homer to left in the third. The Red Sox put runners on first and second with no outs in the fourth, but managed just one run on Daniel Nava’s sacrifice fly.

Pence upped Philadelphia’s advantage to 5-2 with a solo homer to left-center in the fifth before Ross responded with his own homer in the sixth to pull Boston within 5-3. It was Ross’ fifth off of Hamels in 37 at-bats.

“(Hamels) had a good fastball,” said Phillies bench coach Pete Mackanin, who filled in for suspended manager Charlie Manuel. “He wasn’t as sharp as he had been over the course of the year. He did settle down, did a great job. He made a few mistakes but certainly pitched well enough to win and we’re all pretty pleased.”

Gonzalez’s homer off the second deck in right off reliever Chad Qualls in the eighth made it 5-4. But Galvis got the run back in the bottom of the frame with a solo shot to left off Franklin Morales.

Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was forced to leave the game in the bottom of the fifth with a cut on his left ear after Bard’s pitch hit Wigginton, deflected off Wigginton’s right forearm and hit the catcher on the left side of the head just below the ear.

Saltalamacchia immediately went to the ground, appearing to be in a great deal of pain, and stayed face down for a few minutes before being attended to by the Boston training staff. He walked off under his own power and was replaced by Kelly Shoppach.

Valentine was ejected in the ninth inning by first-base umpire Gary Darling for arguing Darling’s out call at first base on Marlon Byrd’s groundout.

Ross fouled a ball off his left leg in the eighth inning and didn’t come out in the field in the ninth.

Notes: Manuel missed the game after being suspended one game for his ejection by umpire Bob Davidson Tuesday night. … Philadelphia’s crowd of 45,205 was the 223rd straight sellout, and 239th counting postseason play. … Former Red Sox manager Butch Hobson, now heading the Lancaster Barnstormers in the Atlantic League, became the 20th manager to reach 1,500 career victories with the club’s win Thursday. … Boston left-hander Jon Lester (2-3, 3.71) is scheduled to face Phillies right-hander Joe Blanton (4-3, 2.96) on Saturday night.

Mali mediator in talks with rebels in north: official

West Africa’s mediator for Mali has begun talks with the Islamist and Tuareg rebel groups who seized the north of the country after a coup in March, officials said on Thursday.

The mediator, Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore, “has begun consultations with the different armed groups with a view to lay out an agenda to get out of the crisis in northern Mali,” Burkina Faso Foreign Minister Djibrill Bassole told a press conference.

The aim of the talks is to “reach as soon as possible a deal between the transitional government and the armed groups that will preserve the territorial integrity of Mali, security and human rights,” he said.

“The consultations are proceeding with extreme caution because of the strong rivalries that pit the armed groups against each other.”

Compaore was appointed mediator in the Mali crisis by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following the March 22 coup.

Contacts have been established with the main ethnic Tuareg rebel group MNLA, the Islamist Ansar Dine group as well as the Mujao group that presents itself as a splinter group of the Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQMI), a source close to the Burkina Faso president’s office told AFP.

The groups took advantage of the power vacuum created by the mid-level army officers’ coup to capture the vast desert north of the country, but have very different goals, with the Tuaregs demanding independence and the Islamists pushing to impose Sharia law.

Compaore recently sent an envoy to northern Mali to open communications with the groups, said a source close to the mediation.

Supporters and foes of the coup meanwhile gathered for a forum on the turmoil in the north.

“In spite of the institutional crisis, in spite of the partition of the country, we must not give in to defeatism, we must not give up,” said the leader of the Party for a National Renaissance (Parena), Tiebile Drame.

The forum, organised by Parena, gathered members of political parties and civic associations, elected politicians and invited foreign guests, with the aim of finding solutions to the crisis.

In his letter of invitation to the forum, Drame said that the coup had “sped up the partition of the country, of which two-thirds are now occupied by various rebel groups, both Malian and foreign, which are imposing their laws on our people.”

The forum took place against the backdrop of a total political impasse.

ECOWAS mediators planned for the transitional government that took over from the junta to hold power for 12 months.

But the coup leaders, who retain strong influence in Bamako even after handing power back to civilians, refuse to see interim president Dioncounda Traore, sworn in on April 12, stay in office more than 40 days, beyond May 22.

Bassole, the Burkina Faso foreign minister, said mediators would re-open talks at the weekend with the coup leaders.

Mediators have recommended the Malian government take the question of the length of the transition to the constitutional court, he said.

“We shouldn’t bring the house down at the end of 40 days,” he said.

ECOWAS repeated Thursday its threat of targeted sanctions against the leaders of the coup for disrupting the transition process.

Ministers from the regional bloc are due to hold new talks on Mali and Guinea-Bissau, also struggling to restore order after an April 12 coup, in Abidjan on Saturday.

Cannes opens with Anderson’s ‘Moonrise,’ camel

CANNES, France (AP) ? Wes Anderson opened the 65th Cannes Film Festival with his meticulously composed ode to young love, “Moonrise Kingdom,” while less mannered theatrics surrounded the annual French Riviera extravaganza.

Anderson and his star-studded cast declared the festival officially begun at the opening ceremony Wednesday night shortly after striding down the absurdly glamorous Cannes red carpet, a seaside gauntlet of tuxedos and photographers. The premiere announced the start of 12 days of the most selective festival slate in cinema, with eagerly anticipated films to follow from many of the world’s most esteemed directors.

That is, when a camel isn’t running amok.

Sideshows are as much a part of Cannes as the main events, a tradition kicked off this year by Sacha Baron Cohen. The comedian again promoted his upcoming film, “The Dictator,” with a stunt, this time taking a humped mammal on a stroll down the Croisette, Cannes’ famous promenade.

The more dignified, black-tie-only opening ceremony was hosted by Bernice Bejo, who starred in one of the hits of last year’s Cannes, “The Artist” ? which went on to win the best picture Academy Award. In attendance, along with the cast of “Moonrise Kingdom,” were Jane Fonda, Eva Longoria, Lana Del Rey and Alec Baldwin, who gallantly carried his fianc?, Hilaria Thomas, up the many stairs of the Palais.

While Cannes’ 65th anniversary ? marked by festival posters of Marilyn Monroe ? suggests maturity, “Moonrise Kingdom” began things on a childlike note.

The film is about two preteens (newcomers Jared Gilman and Kaya Heyward) in love and running away together on a remote New England island in a 1965, Norman Rockwell-esque America. Stamped with Anderson’s trademark visual style to almost the degree of his animated “The Fantastic Mr. Fox,” the movie is seen mostly from the point of view of the kids.

The adults in the film ? a combination of Anderson regulars such as Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman with newcomers such as Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton ? are more cynical and react in different ways to the purity of the children’s gambit.

“These are what you call art films,” Murray deadpanned at the film’s press conference. “All we get is a trip to Cannes.”

Moonrise Kingdom,” Anderson’s first film at Cannes, was received well and found largely positive reviews ? a thoroughly Wes Anderson film, it was roundly decided ? starting the festival off with a congenial vibe.

Murray was happy to tweak the entry of the action star Willis to Anderson’s familial troupe of players.

“We could have gotten the Muscles from Brussels, but it wouldn’t have been the same,” said Murray, alluding to Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Earlier, Baron Cohen appeared in character as Admiral General Aladeen at a news conference outside his hotel. A camel was brought to him, which he then mounted with some trouble and rode down the row of boutique stores to apparently take in some shopping.

As he slowly made his way down the street, Baron Cohen was mobbed by dozens of photographers, bringing traffic to a halt and drawing the curiosity of police. After a short stroll, Baron Cohen turned around and returned to the hotel.

Such a stunt, while certainly unique, isn’t uncommon at Cannes, where movies often go to extremes to catch the world media’s attention. Billboards of films due out this year are plastered around town and many others are being screened out of competition.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures have consistently used the festival to hype projects in the works, and did so again Wednesday with a presentation of “The Rise of the Guardians,” an animated family film for this year’s holiday movie season.

It gathers slightly different versions of mythic childhood characters ? including Santa Claus (Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman) and the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fischer) ? in an “Avengers”-like league of world protection.

Baldwin, never one to bite his tongue, showed no interest in sugarcoating the truth for younger audiences: “Fairy Tooth is a club in lower Manhattan,” he declared.

A jury of nine will sift through the 22 in-competition entries ? which include Walter Salles’ “On the Road,” David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis” and Michael Hanakes’ “Amour” ? to decide the festival’s top award, the prestigious Palme d’Or.

This year’s jury is presided over by Nanni Moretti, who won the festival’s top prize in 2006 for “The Son’s Room,” and includes actors Ewan McGregor and Diane Kruger, directors Alexander Payne and Raoul Peck, and fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.

At Cannes, the psychology of the jurors is analyzed like tea leaves for hints of what kind of material they might respond best to. Moretti lamented the feverish scrutiny of the jury, saying he preferred when jury meetings were as secret as the thoughts of the conclave of cardinals who choose Roman Catholic popes ? the subject of Moretti’s most recent film, “Habemus Papam.”

“There were two remaining taboos in the world: the silence after the awards and the conclave,” Moretti said. “Now it’s just the conclave.”

Any puffs of white smoke at Cannes, though, are more likely to be the result of mischief from Baron Cohen than peaceful deliberation.

Steven Tyler predicts Jessica will be new ‘Idol’

By Us Weekly

There’s still one week to go before “American Idol’s” 11th season finale, but Steven Tyler made a bold prediction Wednesday that 16-year-old standout Jessica Sanchez will clinch this year’s title.

Performing three numbers Wednesday, the teen from San Diego, Calif., tackled Mariah Carey’s “My All” for the first judges’ choice round. Jennifer Lopez — who sources tell Us Weekly will bow out of Idol after this season’s finale — knew it was a tall order when choosing the song for Sanchez, and applauded her for pulling it off.

PHOTOS: Before they were on “Idol “

“That’s hard!” Lopez, 42, said of Carey’s breathy 1997 hit, which Sanchez performed despite a sore throat. “That’s what we wanted to show people (with our song choice): that you could get through a song like that and do it in a beautiful way — and you did.”

Longtime Sanchez supporter Tyler, 64, was especially wowed by her rendition — and quickly declared it was game over for fellow finalists Phillip Phillips and Joshua Ledet. “When you sing you make people hang on your every note,” the Aerosmith frontman said. “I hope you get used to encores. You’ll be the last one standing, I believe.”

PHOTOS: “Idol’s” hottest on-stage styles

Later, for Sanchez’s contestants’ choice pick, the petite powerhouse belted out Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” to the delight of Tyler, who released the track with his band in 1998.

Ledet — who impressed with his version of Mary J. Blige’s “No More Drama” among other songs — says there’s no hard feelings when it comes to Tyler’s endorsement of Sanchez.

PHOTOS: Most memorable “Idol” contestants

“I think he was legit (in his critique), because Jessica is amazing,” Ledet told Us Weekly of Tyler. “She probably could be the last one standing. I want to win, but at this point, we’re all winners. I’m not gonna say I don’t care, but I will be just as happy about me winning (as I would if) Phillip or Jessica win.”

The Belgian horse. | *A blog for Pets*

Historically, it is theoretically possible the Belgian may have had ancestors who were destriers in the Middle Ages, although there is no independent evidence to support this claim.
The foundation stock for the Belgian horse was originally known as the Brabant.

Other names for essentially the same breed include the Cheval de trait Belge, Braban?on, and Belgisch Trekpaard.

Until the 1940s, the Belgian and the Brabant were essentially the same breed. Following World War II, the Brabant in Europe was selectively bred to be thicker bodied and heavier, while in the United States the Belgian was bred to be somewhat taller and lighter bodied.

The main use was as a farm horse. Closely related breeds include the Trait du Nord and Nederlands Trekpaard.

In 1887, the American Association of Importers and Breeders of Belgian Draft Horses was founded in Wabash, Indiana to register and keep track of all Belgian Draft Horses. Today, the Belgian is the most numerous breed of draft horse in the United States.

Importation of Belgians to the USA ended in bulk after the beginning of the Second World War with Erwin F. Dygert transporting the last Belgians out of Europe as the war was beginning.

Belgians are still used as working animals, but have also become popular as show horses, and pleasure riding horses. The Brabant and related breeds remaining in Belgium today are also desirable for horse meat, producing a tender meat that is considered a delicacy.

The Belgian Draft horse or Belgian, also known as Belgian Heavy Horse, Braban?on, or Brabant, is a draft horse breed from the Brabant region of modern Belgium, where it is called the Cheval de trait belge or Flemish: Belgisch Trekpaard. It is one of the strongest of the heavy breeds.

The breed associations are the Soci?t? Royale Le Cheval de Trait Belge/ Koninklijke Maatschappij het Belgisch Trekpaard and the Eleveurs Wallons du Cheval de Trait Belge/ Vlaamse Fokkers van het Belgisch Trekpaard.

Need a vacation ?

Colors normally are a type of light chestnut sometimes called a “sorrel,” with a flaxen mane and tail.
On average the Belgian grows to weigh slightly over 900?kilograms (2,000 pounds). Currently, the world’s tallest Belgian Draft is Radar, a gelding foaled in 1998 in Iowa. He stands at 19.3??hands (2.02 metres) at the withers, and weighs over 2,400 pounds (1,100?kg).

Belgians have a high occurrence of junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB), an inherited genetic disorder that causes newborn foals to lose large areas of skin and have other abnormalities, normally resulting in euthanasia.

A study conducted in 2001-2003 found that 17.1% of tested Belgians in the US and Canada were carriers, including 13.5% of stallions and 28.9% of mares. If carriers are not mated, JEB can be avoided, and scientists are studying the disease further in the hope of completely eliminating it.

The US Belgian breed registry requires JEB testing. Belgians have also been identified to be at risk for chronic progressive lymphedema, a chronic progressive disease that includes symptoms of progressive swelling, hyperkeratosis and fibrosis of distal limbs.

The disease is similar to chronic lymphedema in humans.
The world’s largest horse was a Belgian Draft named Brooklyn Supreme, who weighed 3,200?lb (1,500?kg) and stood at 19.2 hands (1.98 m).

Belgian horses are able to pull tremendous weights. At the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado, a team of two horses in the Heavyweight class pulled 17,000 pounds a distance of 7?ft 2 in (7,700?kg a distance of 2.18 m).

The team of Belgians weighed 4,800 pounds (2,200?kg). At the Iowa State fair, the heavyweight champions in the pulling contest pulled 14,600 pounds the complete distance of 15?ft (6,690?kg, 4.6 m). The team consisted of one Belgian and one Percheron and weighed 3,600 pounds (1,600?kg).
